Don't buy the Jamo A102HCS5 speakers until you read this ...

I came across the Jamo A102HCS5 5.1 surround sound speaker package after my trusty old Kenwood surround sound recently gave up the ghost, leaving no option but to check out the range of speaker packages currently on the market. Back when I bought the Kenwood, choices were few and far between (I'd had it for some years!), but things are certainly different these days.

I looked at many different options but as I researched more and more, I started to realise not all speaker packages are the same in terms of pricing v's performance, and my extensive research finally led me to the Jamo A102HCS5.

What to look for when buying a speaker package

It didn’t take me long to realise that there are a few important things to keep in mind when buying a surroundsound speaker package. These are:

• Your budget, how much money do you want to spend?
• The size of the room you plan to put the speaker package in
• Quality and quantity of the components

If you just buy the first speaker package you see based on price alone then you are destined for trouble particularly if you want the best quality of sound possible for your money, which is the aim of the game here. So stick with me as I will be explaining each of these points in relation to the Jamo A102HCS5 surround sound speaker package.

How much do you want to spend?

There are hundreds of different packages out there ranging from extremely cheap to ridiculously expensive and knowing roughly how much money you want to spend helps reduce the options considerably.

The main price brackets for speakers are:

• Up to £500
• £500 - £1000
• £1000-£2000
• £2000 +

I decided to target the first group up to £500 which is more than enough for what I was looking for. Actually, I wanted to spend around £250 but I was willing to spend a little bit more if I found a real good buy.

The Jamo A102HCS5 speaker package has an RRP of £300 and therefore is middle of the road within the first price bracket. Actually, many places sell them for much cheaper than the RRP but more on this later.

How big is your room?

Have you ever walked past a house and glanced in the window to see a 60 inch wall mounted TV in a room the size of a cupboard? It sure doesn’t look comfortable to watch and the same goes for speakers, you don’t want speakers that take over the room and over power everything else.

My room is of average size, it has a 40inch TV, two sofas, a coffee table and a book case. I wanted a set of speakers that didn’t take up too much room and I didn’t really want floor standing speakers due to lack of floor space.

The Jamo A102HCS5 speaker package consists of four wall mounted satellite speakers, a front speaker and a subwoofer. This means the speakers can be discreetly fixed to the walls or on furniture and the center speaker can sit nicely on the fire place or mounted underneath the TV.

Quality and Quantity

Quantity of components is easy and directly relates to room size and available space. Obviously we don’t want a 10.1 surround sound speaker system in our room the size of a cupboard if we don’t have anywhere to put it (especially if we already have that 60 inch wall mounted TV in the way). The Jamo A102HCS5 surround sound speakers are a 5.1 configuration which means there are 4 satelite speakers, one center speaker and a subwoofer, perfect for the average sized room in the average sized house.

Quality of components is where a little bit of research comes in to play and you’ll be pleased to hear that I’ve already done the hard work for you. On taking the speakers out of the box the first thing that strikes you is the quality, I was really surprised but they are beautifully made with an excellent build quality. They have their own brackets which are easy to fit if you want to mount them on the wall. They also have nifty connectors for the speaker wire so it’s all super easy and quick to connect. They are small compared to others on the market and look great on my bookcase.

The sound that these speakers give is absolutely brilliant, they’re much better than my old Kenwood 5.1 system which I used to think was pretty good. The clarity of speech is great, separation of sound excellent, bass very good and volume way more than enough. All in all I couldn't be happier.

How much should you expect to pay?

The RRP for the Jamo A102HCS5 5.1 surround sound speaker package on the Jamo website is £300 but you really shouldn’t be paying any more than £200 for these speakers. The cheapest I have seen them is on Amazon who consistently sell the speaker package for under £190.

Any complaints?

I found very few complaints for this 5.1 surround sound speaker package on consumer sites around the internet. One consumer did express concern that the instructions are basic so don't rely on them for a good setup, but there is a wealth of information on the internet with many hints and tips directly relating to these speakers.

Another customer complained that no speaker wire is included although if you’re anything like me, you’ll want to choose your speaker wire separately for optimal performance. They do come with a sub woofer lead though.
